We will be visiting the former Lincoln home of Walter Gropius (1883-1969), the founder of the school of design known as the Bauhaus in Germany. The Bauhaus embraced new materials, new technology, and sought to create a new aesthetic, unencumbered by historical tradition. Students were taught that beauty was to be found in the economy of form, in expressive use of materials, and in solutions that were suitable, economical, practical, and therefore inherently elegant.
The Gropius House was designed with Bauhaus ideas in mind while in a New England landscape. We will be guided by Wendy Hubbard, who will guide us through the collection, interpretive themes, landscape, and family anecdotes and show us some items normally not seen in the house.
Thank you to Wendy Hubbard and Christine Messer for helping us to arrange this tour.
