This December, join your fellow history nerds in Salem, for a seasonal celebration hosted by the House of the Seven Gables and Salem Historical Society.

We’ll meet at the House of the Seven Gables, then start with a walking tour of the Derby Street Historic District, led by the Historical Society.  Derby Street is an important part of Salem’s historic waterfront.  At the height of Salem’s prominence as a port, Derby Street was lined with wharves and shops, sailmakers and warehouses.  Prominent merchants and ship captains called it home.

Following the walking tour, we’ll have an opportunity to take a private twilight tour of The House of the Seven Gables, while it is decorated for the Christmas season.  Though it needs little introduction, the House of the Seven Gables is the oldest wood framed mansion in New England.  The home was built in 1668, and achieved fame after Nathaniel Hawthorne’s eponymous novel was published in 1851.  Today, it’s one of Salem’s premier historic sites and tourist destinations, and they have offered to open their doors for this special event.

Finally, the evening will wrap up with pizza, beer, and soft drinks in the 1682 Hooper-Hathaway House, a perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow History Campers a little bit better, look back on the first season of History Camp monthly events, and start considering the 2017 season.

Salem is accessible on the Newburyport/Rockport Commuter Rail line, or via the 450 and 455 bus lines.  Walking directions from the station to the House of the Seven Gables are provided on the House’s website.
