Searching for Zickery Prince: A Journey Through the Archives
In this session, Melissa M. Cybulski will share her journey through archives, databases, and libraries looking for details of the life of Zickery Prince, a man enslaved in 18th Century Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and Simsbury, Connecticut. Zickery’s life can be traced for more than 40 years, through seven owners, two states, and ultimately a Revolutionary War hospital in Fishkill, New York, where he died during his service in the Continental Army.
Melissa M. Cybulski is Vice-President of the Longmeadow Historical Society in Western Massachusetts (longmeadowhistoricalsociety.org). She is a local historian, museum guide at the Emily Dickinson Museum, and consultant for Historic New England’s Witness Stones program. The subject of this presentation, Zickery Prince, will be memorialized with a Witness Stone this year. Melissa presented on the topic of Johnny Appleseed’s Revolutionary Childhood at History Camp 2025.
