Join us for a special tour of the Massachusetts Historical Society and their latest exhibition on September 10. The exhibition, called “Turning Points,” looks at moments in American history when everything changed or a process was started that changed everything. Fifteen eye witness accounts, personal records, and items that were present at these moments of change are displayed.
These are not necessarily the most important events in American history nor is this a comprehensive list of pivotal moments, but these are objects in MHS’s collection that give a remarkable and personal view into moments of change in our country’s history. They include a letter and photographs from Susan and George Lodge recounting sailing in New York Harbor on September 11, 2001; a letter from Theodore Roosevelt from San Juan Hill telling Henry Cabot Lodge that “We are within measurable distance of a terrible military disaster;” a simple, wooden pen, adorned with tooth-marks that Abraham Lincoln used to sign the Emancipation Proclamation; an account by Paul Revere of his ride; and John Winthrop’s journal describing the Arbella as it awaited its departure for America.
Guests will be walked through the show and given an explanation of the technology used and how that technology could be used by any museum in New England with minimal costs. We will then be shown a one-day only display of some of the amazing items we considered for the exhibition, but in the end decided not to include. Presenters will include Peter Drummey and Gavin Kleespies.
