Zachary M. Schrag, Director of the Masters’ Program in History at George Mason University, on his new book, The Fires of Philadelphia: Citizen-Soldiers, Nativists, and the 1844 Riots Over the Soul of a Nation, which looks at the rioting of Protestant ideologues who were seeking to keep Irish Catholics out of the city through violence, even exchanging fire with the militia brought in to restore order.
