New Bedford Whaling Museum Curator’s Tour

Here at the New Bedford Whaling Museum we are able to offer a behind the scenes tour with Dr. Akeia Benard, Curator of Social History. You will be able to see artifacts that cover topics such whaling maritime, scrimshaw, culture, and local/global history. You will see artifacts that have rarely been seen by the general public.

Nathan and Mary Johnson House

From the early years of the 19th century until the onset of the Civil War, the Nathan and Mary Johnson House was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Nathan and Mary were African American entrepreneurs who opened up their home to freedom seekers and assisted their escape to freedom. They were active abolitionists and assisted many including Frederick and Anna Douglass who found their first taste of freedom in New Bedford. Join the members of the New Bedford Historical Society as they share the stories of this small house, its occupants, and its role in local history.
